It was true 30 years ago, and it is still true today:

$10 extra in speakers is worth more than $100 extra in amps, etc.

The electronics are so good that the sound quality of an amp is pretty good even in cheap equipment (oh, I can see the flames coming now - yes, an expensive amp will sound a little bit better, but you need to be a critical listener to hear it. Road noise will hide the difference.) The high-end amps and players and such have much better knobs and switches and whatnot, and generally "feel" better to use. That's where the expensive bits are.

You are quite right to start with speakers, then add head end when you get the cash and the urge.
